Strengthening the relevance and role of the Good Humanitarian Donorship initiative

Final report expected: 2024

2023 marks the twentieth anniversary of the Good Humanitarian Donorship (GHD) initiative. The GHD initiative is an informal donor forum and network which facilitates collective advancement of GHD principles and good practices. The initial 17 donors that signed up to the principles have grown to 42, resulting in the largest system-wide informal humanitarian donor forum and network which has facilitated donor information-sharing, exchange, and learning. Since 2003, the (now) 24 principles have guided humanitarian donors in their policies and practices in support of humanitarian action. As each GHD member has committed to the principles, they have served, to various degrees, the advancement of the GHD initiative and good donorship practices within individual governments and collectively. Two donors co-chair the network on a rotating basis for a period of two years. In 2023, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Estonia, take this role.

In light of the twenty-year anniversary of the initiative, and the requirement for strengthened donor exchange and engagement at a time of unprecedented humanitarian need, the two co-chairs have commissioned ODI/HPG and HERE to review the GHD initiative. The purpose of the review is to advise on strengthening the relevance and role of the GHD-initiative as a key humanitarian initiative that fosters mutually-beneficial donor exchange, strategic collaboration, and collective influence
