The Future of Switzerland’s Humanitarian Aid

Final report expected: Mid 2025

Switzerland’s humanitarian tradition has long been a cornerstone of its international cooperation efforts. However, the global landscape is evolving rapidly due to geopolitical shifts, climate change, and economic uncertainties. In response, Switzerland is exploring how its humanitarian aid can remain impactful and principled in an increasingly fragmented and unpredictable world.

This project aims to assess Switzerland’s comparative strengths, weaknesses, and strategic opportunities in humanitarian aid. Through internal and external analyses, case studies, and stakeholder consultations, it will outline concrete options for how Switzerland can maximize its impact in the coming decade.

Key questions guiding this work include:

  • How has the humanitarian landscape evolved, and what major trends will shape the future?
  • In which areas does Switzerland provide the greatest added value, and where is its influence more limited?
  • What should Switzerland do more of, less of, or differently to enhance its humanitarian contributions?

The findings will inform policy discussions and strategic decisions, ensuring Switzerland continues to uphold its humanitarian commitments while adapting to new realities. The process includes workshops, interviews, and in-depth research, with final recommendations expected by mid-2025.
