Following an external assessment of policies and views in IOM on protection undertaken by a HERE member of staff at the end of 2020, the organisation decided to launch a project to define an institutional approach to Protection (DIAP). The 10-month project seeks to arrive at a shared understanding of what protection is and what steps are required to invigorate protection as part of the organisation’s identity. Defining IOM’s approach to protection is a key step towards its institutionalisation. In turn, having an institutionalised approach to protection in place will contribute to clarity, coherence, predictability, and quality of IOM’s work and benefit the entire organisation. The project will reach out to a large number of IOM staff, protection partners, and donor governments.

IOM has contracted a HERE member of staff to lead this project as senior adviser.
